And no, i am not a Ph.D. I wish though
Am I the only one who finds this practice (paying someone to write something for you and slapping your name on it) unethical ? I’m serious. My wide and I had many disagreements about this and I told her that I don’t want her to share this fact ( that she’s cheating in my opinion , getting help in her opinion) with my kids.
There is definitely a gray area here, and if Numi (or anyone) actually writes someone else’s essay for them to get into business school or pass a class, that is definitely unethical. Numi seems like an ethical enough guy not to do that, but it doesn’t mean that he could be manipulated into doing that. If Numi is simply reviewing an essay and giving advice and feedback on how to write it; that’s fine. Exactly where ethical becomes unethical is difficult to say, but that doesn’t mean that there isn’t an ethical issue here. It’s fine to get help or organize production, but if an essay is presented as your own output and it isn’t, then that is effectively fraud. If you are presenting work as the output of a team that you managed or contracted, then there is no issue.
^Totally agreed. I would never write an essay for someone because it’s straight up unethical. What I was referring to was that if I ever become a teacher and a student asks me for help on his/her admissions essay, I should do it for free (as opposed to charging) - not because it’s a plagiarism issue, but from a moralistic standpoint. It’s like a professor saying that he or she is going to charge you for recommendation letters… which is wrong.
Yeah, I definitely don’t do any essay “writing” for people; what I do is collaborate closely with people to help them identify areas of business leadership throughout their lifetime of experiences, and demonstrate how to convey these ideas in the most compelling and unique fashion. A common error for many applicants is that they get so caught up in what they’re trying to say that they don’t really answer the question that’s being asked, or their definition of leadership is so narrow that they don’t make the most of their portfolio of experiences. Candidates often either say things that either don’t make total sense with respect to their post-MBA aspirations, or fail to tell a memorable and distinctive “story” about themselves. While I do provide editorial suggestions for grammar and structure, that’s actually a very mundane and rudimentary aspect of what I do; any English major or competent writer can do a fine job at that. The real meat of what I offer is helping people think critically not only about essays individually, but how they complement one another in painting the most complete picture of the candidate and in creating a unique “brand” for the candidate. I ask them questions about their leadership and bring to light certain traits and experiences they may never thought about before. Lastly, I go through a meticulous review of their professional and personal experiences discussed in the essay to an degree that might make some clients’ heads spin. However, ultimately my clients believe in the work we do together and realize that this diligent attention to detail is always for the best, and this is something that’s reflected in the MBA admissions results they’ve been able to attain. People think you have to write a structurally flawless essay, but what really matters more is how compelling of a story you can craft for yourself as to why you’re a future business leader. In the end, I really view myself as a “consultant” or “coach.” The final product that people receive in working with me is a product they’d be proud to call their own. And most importantly, we go through several revision and editorial processes so that the client knows exactly what changes they have to make, in the hopes that they will not only achieve positive career results, but will also feel completely confident in their newly acquired analytical/writing abilities that they will never need to hire another career consultant.

I like the way you write numi. Articulate, succinct and with a clear purpose. I think you might be me.
Thanks Muddahudda! I don’t think I’m quite as succinct as you, but at least I’m getting there
And with an error in parallel construction! not only…but also
Ouch…I need to pay myself to proofread my own postings
I wish I could pay myself to eat ice cream
If I submit a bad post on AnalystForum, can I fire myself?
Once you’re further along, MBA Volunteers (http://www.mbavolunteers.org/) is an awesome resource for MBA essays. Donate $250 to one of several charities, and a current MBA student at a top school will review your application & essays. I used them as a sanity check, and it was definitely worth it.
I’m going to start making a market in numi derivatives. The demand is there.
