Comp-Sci: Aren’t you a PhD?
That would be cheating and Numi would not do that ( I think).
Numi is great on these forums and seems like a great guy, so I ask you guys and numi with the utmost respect, why is he doing this type of service if he is in PE, surely the extra income makes little difference?
comp_sci_kid – thanks for your e-mail. I replied back last night with some comments detailing my services and client testimonials. QuantJock_MBA and dhyun3 – thanks for the kind words. transferpricingCFA – I actually left private equity recently to do a pre-MBA consultancy in corporate strategy at a Fortune 50 company. I wanted to do something different since I’m going to business school in the fall, and given that I’m still trying to find my career niche, I wanted to broaden my experiences before business school as much as possible. I wouldn’t say that the extra income makes “little” difference – in fact, it’s fairly material given the demand for my offerings, which are offered not only for considerably less than what others charge but are also of much higher quality. So, the value proposition is simple – you get better quality for less money than what most career consulting firms can provide. Moreover, a second important component of the value proposition is that people know who I am based on reputation I have developed over the years. You are working with a known entity, and you know the type of feedback that I offer. It might not always be music to someone’s ears, but I try to ensure that my feedback is always candid and constructive. People generally appreciate this approach. I’m able to do this because I’m an extremely efficient and diligent worker, and I also have the requisite industry experience so I know exactly how to advise people while not wasting their time nor mine. I’m sure almost all my clients would attest to this. My pricing is also such that I’m basically offering my services at a rate that’s equivalent to the return on my time that I could be earning elsewhere, either on my job or via personal investing. However, I have been and will continue to gradually increase my prices in order to match the demand, especially as I continue to build my reputation and client base. On a broader level, I’m also curious to see how fast this enterprise will grow, and I’m constantly thinking about whether this career consulting enterprise is something scalable. It’s a “learning by doing” endeavor for me, and I know I would love to be my own boss. I’m curious to see whether this consulting project can be it. Only time will tell, but things look pretty promising so far. Moreover, at the end of the day, I just enjoy helping people, and it means a lot to me when I can help my clients get into top business schools as well as the jobs they’re going for. My track record to date is strong enough where I know I’m doing something right for my clients; now it’s a matter of being able to replicate that and expand into other product areas too. Anyway, I hope that helps. I’m happy to discuss in greater detail via e-mail if you’d like, especially if there are circumstances specific to your own situation that you’d like to discuss confidentially.
transferpricingCFA, one more thing I’d like to add: you correctly pointed out that I have worked in equity research and private equity. It’s for these reasons that people continue to seek out my services. I find that many people on this forum don’t want to hear sugar-coated words – their time is valuable, especially when studying for CFA exams and dealing with the daily rigors of their work. They want to hear the true lowdown as it relates to their situation. Sometimes it’s hard to find honest and objective critiques, especially on the internet where so many people talk about stuff that they haven’t personally experienced. The perspectives and advice that I give are truly my own; they are not grounded in speculation or conjecture. They are based on personal experience, as well as those learnings I have gleaned from my closest friends and colleagues.
^That’s great Numi! I too was very interested in the whole college admissions essays / career advice job outlet as my friends and students continually asked me to proof their essays. The downside was that these were my friends, and I just couldn’t charge them (even if they offered me money). I thought I could potentially do this as a viable side-business, but… seeing that my future prospects could actually land me a job in academia, it could have some unintended ethical consequences. $300 is not bad, I know someone that paid over 1k for her admissions application reviews for MBA, and it was utterly crap. I ended up fixing it up for free… I generally love to help people and what not (and do it for free), but for this particular person… it was a different story. Come to think of it, I still correct essays for free.
Ocean Mist, thanks for your perspectives. Similar to what you noted, I also feel there is a great sense of satisfaction when I can help people achieve their desired outcomes. In my current pre-MBA role, although I’m officially in corporate strategy at a Fortune 50, I really view my role as an internal consultant. Basically, all the work that I’m doing right now is “consulting” in one form or another – although my professional background to date has been entirely in finance, I feel like my skill set and personality are better geared towards strategy/management work rather than finance. I just enjoy advising, inspiring and motivating people much more than crunching numbers, negotiating covenants and financing terms, etc… Also, I agree that $300 per essay review isn’t bad, especially for someone that’s qualified in that area. However, I should also note that I’m currently charging anywhere from just $150-195 per essay (not the $300 quoted earlier), and offer substantial discounts on multiple essay packages on a case-by-case basis.
I heard a story where this person would charge an outrageous amount to prep highschool students so they could go to ‘elite’ universities, or refund the full amount if they didnt. The persons main demographic were very wealthy asian-american, parents would pay anything to ensure that their kids goto a good university. The guy didnt really do anything, but the majority of the kids went on to good universities because of they were well educated from the get-go, and already were on the right track. He made more money , than he had to refund. He got busted cause someone found his student’s personal information a dumpster and turned it in and exposed him.
My wife needs a 15-page paper on Green Energy with a Turnitin index of no more than 10%. How much for that ?
Good question, mo34. Unfortunately that’s beyond the scope of my “expertise”…
