Management Accounting

To those who have studied this stuff before: which of the following two textbooks would you recommend for some insight into the finance/control field? Management Accounting (5th Edition) (9780136005315): Anthony A. Atkinson, Robert S. Kaplan, Ella Mae Matsumura, S. Mark Young http://www.amazon.com/Management-Accounting-5th-Anthony-Atkinson/dp/0136005314/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254671506&sr=1-1 Managerial Accounting (9780073379616): Ray Garrison, Eric Noreen, Peter Brewer http://www.amazon.com/Managerial-Accounting-Ray-Garrison/dp/0073379611/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254671582&sr=1-1 Thanks.

The first by Atkinson et al is the best. I have used Ray Garrison in the past and I think it is crap. Check out Horngren, Datar & Foster(should be 13th edition), very good text too.

Neither - Will get the name of the book I used in final year when I get home…had some good explanations in it.

If I’m not mistaken it was an Irish author - I’ll get the details in a few hours anyway but it had good explanations for the basics and techniques but I wouldn’t say it is the most advanced book on the market so it depends on what you are looking for.

I took the managerial accounting course back in college but don’t remember much from it. It felt out of the blue at the time because we didn’t take management strategy courses along with them (ie. study activity based costing, etc.) What do you guys use it for?

i need it for a new analyst gig edit: posted too much info

I was mistaken, not an Irish author but european edition: http://www.amazon.co.uk/Management-Accounting-Will-Seal/dp/0077109392/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&s=books&qid=1254816486&sr=8-3 Not sure this would be sufficient for an analyst gig as it does a lot of the basics and is really easy to understand but without seeing other books I couldn’t tell you if it goes into enough detail.

Ray Garrison, Eric Noreen, Peter Brewer - this is the text we used in my management accounting course, I thought it was pretty decent.
