Masters of Econ?

Anyone on this forum have a Masters of Econ? What value did it hold for you? I’m thinking the coursework might give you a good intro to math, research, and modeling…

i’m an MA in econ. i loved being an econ major and wouldn’t change a thing. i’m an odd case as i did not leverage my masters in econ. i did not start my career of with a bang but with a dud. however, i’m happy where i am as i learned some serious lessons. it added value for me as it educated me on economics and logic. being an economist allows you to think logically about problems and to realize its limits. the education i received allowed me to understanding understanding. i would say however, that the education provided will only be absorbed by 5% of the class.

I prefer my Masters of the Universe. That’s gotten me quite far in life.

Frank, would be curious to hear more about what you did after your econ MA. That is, if you are willing to share, of course =)

Economists are the dumbasses of the business world.

FINforLIL Wrote: ------------------------------------------------------- > Economists are the dumbasses of the business > world. Can you give some names?

I’d have to disagree with you FinforLIL, I’m not an econ major myself, but the theories/concepts involved in economics and their general usefulness are hardly dumb. Whats your beef with economists?

Frank, Are you happy you chose Econ? Would u ever go back for your PhD?

Jed Bartlett was a PhD in Economics and also won the nobel prize. he served the max 2 terms and was a brilliant leader even though he had MS.

Maybe if we had some neoclassical economists in government, we wouldn’t be in the mess we’re in now.

i would be happy to share my experience. please email me at tangask at gmail.com I admit my grammar is faulty and sloppy. to the poster who insulted economists: you do not understand economics nor do you understand finance. don’t make a retarded 2nd year undergrad statement like that again or i’ll tax dat azz. *i hope i used the “nor” correctly"

Graduate work in Econ is very interesting. I agree with the fact that it improves thinking or rather teaches a system of thinking. Old prof used to say it teaches how to think like a two fisted economist “on the one hand…on the other hand” I always found application through research of real world events more interesting than the theory itself. If undergrad introduces you to some of the tools then grad work allows you to start applying those tools to the real world.

WHat does Masters of Econ do for your career? Econ is a solid UG major for getting business and finance jobs. Econ PhDs are also sought after for high level stuff. However, I’ve never seen a job posting that requires or desires a master of Econ.

However, I’ve never seen a job > posting that requires or desires a master of Econ an education is not commensurate with a terrific career or a lot money. those i knew who were good at economics did it because they loved economics. if you’re looking at a PHD/Masters as a means to get rich, you’re not going to be very successful in academia or in your career imo. but what does a PHD do for your career? say you’re good at economics, you end up teaching the subject that you love on a schedule of your choosing all in the meantime exploring the frontiers of your subject matter and earning easy 6 figures plus. That’s not a bad life to me. surely beats working 12 hours a day for ppl you hate and trying to obtain a semblance of respect.

Studies show that on average income increases at an inceasing rate till undergrad then increase at degreaseing rate till masters and then decrease for any level of education after that. Masters Econ is usually thought of as a working degree at government and think tank type places. Depends also on the concerntration/focus. Say econometrics versus policy, two different worlds. I would say that MA Econ does little for your career in finance. It may though help you understand the futility of forcasting the future with less that perfect data and unrealistic assumptions. We had a joke in school. Have you ever seen a rich economist?

Frank, What field do you work in now? I’m mulling over a masters in econ after a few more years of work experience. I think it would be interesting to work as an economist at a bank, assuming there are economists or banks left after a few years…

“Have you ever seen a rich economist?” There are lots of rich economists. Academics generally make a decent wage and most banks and large investment houses will have a senior economist who is on very good money. More than that, a good understanding of economics is a great platform on which to build a career in financial services. An MA Econ doesn’t necessarily lead to a career as an economist. I would hazard a guess that most economics students end up in employment in tangental careers such as finance or accountancy. It depends what you want to do PtrainerNY. An MA Econ vertainly isn’t going to hurt your career prospects, but would it suit you better than a masters in finance or some other field? “I’ve never seen a job posting that requires or desires a master of Econ” - this is true for the vast majority of finance jobs. Of course an MA Econ is a requirement to actually work as an economist, but not if you want to work most front office finance positions. However, it does put you at an advantage over other candidates without a similar qualification.

in my humble and unqualified opinion, economics has the potential to define the universe and everything in it including abstracst such as love, justice, pain etc. Einstein would have made a good economist.

Pox, i’m at headoffice performing financial analysis. nothing related to economics outside of your typical GDP growth rates, interests rates and the impact it may have on our numbers. Needhelp, I don’t think economics is that powerful outside of quatifiable fields. economist have very poor track records of forecasting. they however, are extremely good at explaining why something occurred, everything from why amanda lang is sleeping with Kevin OLeary to how this whole crisis came about. there plenty of economist who are Market Strategist/CEOs/Portfolio Managers and making a decent living. the amount you earn rarely has to do with what pieces of paper you have. it relies on how good you’re at what you do. apologize for the grammar in advance.
