MBA plus CFA Level 1/2 with Work Exp. job prospects

Hello,

I am a MBA , also known as PGDM or vice versa. i.e. post graduate diploma in management from a decent university in India along with my commerce bachelor’s degree. The University for my master’s is not that good nor bad. I have a few certifications as well in Finance. Freelanced as an Insurance/Mutual funds part time agent for years now and I worked for a year in accounting back office after bachelor’s and now working in Dubai for 6 months in a financial consulting firm. Till the time i complete level 1/2 , it will be 2016 june.

I wanted to know, based on my details wether i will be able to get a job in States/canada? Preferred profiles are Research analysis/Portfolio mngt./fund mngt etc amongst others too. what are the chances, opinions, suggestions etc based on my profile.? Should i pursue for jobs in that region? How will Level 1 or Level 2 help me with it?

Your chances are very small to none. There are already a massive supply of candidates in the states that have a “decent MBA”, that have passed L1 and L2, and don’t require visa sponsorships here in the US. Why would a company go through all the trouble to hire you and bring you here for research or portfolio mgmt?

Unless you are bringing with you a ton of money to invest, or have very high level connections, your chances are almost 0.

Get your facts right. Neither MBA is known as PGDM nor any PGDM is known as MBA in India. Yes, they are in most cases (if PGDM is approved by AICTE) are considered equivalent. Even IIMs, XLRI’s do not offer MBA degrees, they only award PGP Diploma or PGDM since they are autonomous and independent bodies and not Universities (who only are allowed to offer MBA programmes). For career attraction only the PGDM from one of these selected institution only is worthwhile. On similar lines AICTE (All India Council for Technical Education) is allowing approved colleges to run autonomous PGDM course directly approved by AICTE, which also in job market is not much alued qualification. If the University for your “master’s is not that good nor bad” simply means the PGDM is also not that good or bad and employers in US / Canada know that. So any job requiring an MBA on the basis of your PGDM is a far cry for you.

Working as a freelance Insurance/MF agent will not give you any credit in either of these countries as they have essential requirements of certification to carry out these jobs.

Yes, accounting has some scope in both the countries that too if you are professionally qualified in it, which you are not.

No use discussing Level 1 and 2 of CFA for entry level jobs of your choice i.e. Research analysis/PM /Fund Manager etc. in US or Canada as CFA is not meant for that (i.e. a qualification for entry level job by itself). Moreover, it is too early to worry unless you have at least cleared Level 2. Since ultimately, what matters more is your relevant experience in investment and finance, and then only the CFA (not merely level 1 or 2) boosts you chance substantially. The valid approach for you at this juncture may be to acquire best possible relevant experience of 4+ years (even for CFA Charter you will require it) in a reputed organisation (in UAE there are quite a few of them) with focus on learning skills and obtaining knowledge so that you can compete with the qualified people who are already there. You are already on the right path. With the investment of about 5 years experience in good job and a CFA Charter you may get a desired opening in US/Canada. Before that as said in the post above :

Thank you very very much for your advice and guidance. I am working very hard to manage studies and work together at the same time n i hope to clear out both.

I wanted a little more help if possible, Please if you can paste a link here or write a few jobs which i should go for in the Investment/Finance sector that will go with the Charter requirements.?

I am working as an Associate in a financial consulting firm. does this work fine for it or no?.
