Middle office and Valuation for Asset Servicing firm to Portfolio Management?

Hi,

I want to become a Portfolio Manager- Venture Capital Funds and that is the reason I enrolled in the CFA program. Currently, I am in Level 3. I have a background in Mechanical Engineering- I was involved in starting new businesses. I have a MBA in Finance. I do not have any financial services experience.

Currently, I am interviewing for a Middle Office and Valuation position with a Asset Servicing Firm.

Will it be anyway helpful in becoming a portfolio manager?

Yup, sounds like you’re well on your way to becoming a VC partner.

I think the valuation would help getting to VC if that is what you want. However, you can’t just switch into VC and become portfolio manager. You’re going to have to take some sort of associate position and move up in the VC firm. But, getting interviews at VC shops is fairly difficult; getting even an associate position is going to be extrememely hard. Don’t they cover this stuff in the MBA program? It is late October. It seems kind of late for interviews for an MBA grad.

Three questions:

What are you doing now, where did you do your MBA, and which Asset Servicing firm?

What are you doing now?

  • Currently unemployed.

Where did you do your MBA?

  • University of Calgary- it is not a target school and that is the reason I started CFA just after MBA.

I worked for a start-up for some time after MBA.

Which Asset Servicing firm?

  • That I do not want to discolses that is a public forum.

Thank you for your input.

Yes, I understand that I cannot join a VC as a portfolio manager. I am building my skills towards the goal of becoming a Portfolio Manager.

hmmm I think you should jump at any finance - related job you can get at this point.

I second ACE’s point…

VC is a really tough road in Toronto/Canada. Regardless of target/non-target.

I think you should focus on getting some Financial Services job first - ideally something with business valuation involved before you try to get VC. Long road ahead mate.

take the valuation job and kick ass…Then new opportunities will show up.
