Move to Singapore

Hi folks, I’ve decided to move to Singapore as my top priority.

I acknowledge that this will not be extremely simple, but would any of you have advice for how to pull this off? I’m making online applications and using LinkedIn, but I’m sure there is more which could be done. If possible, I would prefer not to quit my London job first.

For example, one of my friends suggested going there for 10-14 days and arranging as many informational meetings / interviews as possible for the trip. That sounds like a great plan.

Any other bright ideas? I need the secret tips that will save me time and get the result faster. Happy to wine and dine anybody who gives me a killer tip (the wining and dining will take place in Singapore, naturally).

Very hard to land something in another place without being there unless you have great experience and/or know the people hiring.

I have a friend who sent a 3 minute video presentation along with his resume to a company via email. You can try that but there is no magic formula.

Is this about a girl?

LOL. I was wondering the same thing…

I just assumed so.

no way. dont want to be jailed if i spit on the sidewalk. nope

How well will a pommie do in a climate that averages 31 celcius with high high high humidity? This girl better be something.

Use Recruitment Agency services which are trustworthy in Singapore, eg: Selby Jenning, Micheal Page, Ambition, etc. They will help you save time and connect you with the right opportunity.

All the best dude.

Interesting and funny replies! Thank you.

But I’m not a pommie and it’s not about a girl.

If anyone really wants to understand the logic, the truth is that I’m at a career point when I need to change jobs anyway. Getting another London job will mean committing to being here for at least another 2-3 years. But I don’t want to do that, because I don’t want to buy an apartment and put down permanent roots in this city, which is the only really good reason to stay here any longer at this stage in my life (28). Therefore, my new job has to be somewhere else.

If one of the tips on this thread works, I’ll stay true to my word.

Why Singapore then? Why not Melbourne or Toronto or Tokyo? Just curious about why you’re thinking of Singapore. Cool choice, just kind of random if you have no ties there?

Go to California. You won’t find better weather.

China the new world leader of economy is nearby … Hong Kong is not a choice

Singapore is ok if you can tolerate the heat. It is f*ing hot there. Also, you will likely live in a shoebox apartment, since that is essentially the only kind of housing most people can afford. Good points are taxes are low, capital gains tax does not exist, food is cheap, and girls will be impressed by your foreign credentials. Singaporean guys tend to be well educated, but they are out of shape, nerdy, and have an inferiority complex when comparing themselves to Westerners. So, you will do well there. Also, Singapore has cultural ties to the UK, so it will be an easier transition compared to moving to Hong Kong or Tokyo.

As for how to actually get a job - nothing to add other than what has already been said. Good luck.

How come move to Singapore leh?!

Lol… funny.

geo: It’s a very nice city, I’ve been there before and had a great time. ohai mentioned most of the attractions. I could move somewhere else but Singapore just happens to be the place which excites me the most (and which speaks English!).

And London is ok but I don’t want to be here forever. I’m not in a relationship at the moment and have no permanent ties here, so there is nothing to prevent me from packing my stuff and leaving. I’ll be a lot further from home but will probably still get to see my family every couple of months. No big deal. Thanks for the replies.

That’s assuming you’re into Asian women.

Air-cons are everywhere! We even need a blazer or bring with us a scarf all the time. So, I don’t think the heat is a big problem :).

Btw, “when a man is tired of London, he is tired of life” smiley???

That’s true. Also, the last time I was in Singapore, I noticed that people spend a lot of time underground in those tunnel/MRT station/shopping mall things. Some people were even just sitting around reading or doing other things like that. However, I did see some marathon guy running around outside. He looked like he was going to die.

Me too. Sniffing around the market, looking for the smart people.
