Muni Analyst

Anyone work directly in this field? I have an interview coming up and would love to learn more about it,

OK no muni bond analyst … Any book suggestions then?

Don’t do it! The muni analysts I work with really dislike it. You’ll aslo end up getting stuck because the skillset doesn’t transfer very well. But if you are hell bent getting into munis, try going to the rating agencies’ websites. You can create a free basic account and download their methodoligies for various muni credits. I would start with state GOs.

Many thanks spun - do you know any of them well enough to make an introduction (via email). I would like to hear some of the reasons behind their dislike of the job or any recommendations they could have. Let me know,

Munis are very opaque and you’re working with financials that are a year old at best. Being an FI analyst is sort of niche career path already and being a muni analyst takes it a couple of steps further.

We work in the same FI research group so I see their ugly mugs everyday. I’m not sure if they really dislike it but they b!tch about the industry all the time. I’m sure one of them wouldn’t mind talking you off the cliff.

.

^ ok bro. I wrote down your email address. Feel free to delete it so you don’t get spammed. I’ll pass it along to the muni guys.

They really need to bring back some kind of PMing.

^Many thanks,

@whatsyourgovt

My muni analyst coworker should be emailing you shortly just in case the address you gave me was a temp. He apologized for the lag but his response was “Hey, I’m in munis.”

He has over 10 years in the industry, sell side high yield and investment grade buy side. He’ll be a good guy to talk to.

Awesome - many thanks,

True, I hear that munis are hard to work with, since municipalities do not have the same disclosure or reporting requirements as corporations. Which come to think of it, is kind of irresponsible.

Yo Spun, Respect.

^Thanks bro.

I believe in KARMA, and I’ve had a lot of help along the way in my career. Just paying back some dues.

Spun - you truly are the man. Many thanks for helping me out - I suggest buying a lottery ticket because i feel like you have good luck coming your way. Thanks agian,

Where are you based out of man? NYC? You are def. a cool guy (and my go-to for FI questions).

Good luck whatsyourgovt. I’m sure you know about emma, but if you don’t you may want to play around and read the dislcosures and stuff: http://www.emma.msrb.org/

My favorite type of munis I’ve come across in my job are conduit municipals. Those can get very sophisticated structure wise and are interesting to analyze.

@whatsyourgovt – Good luck with your job search. I think I’ll stay away from lottery tickets though. I wouldn’t be a REM if I bought one. Sorry, L3 jargon and a poor attempt at CFA humor.

@rawraw – thanks. I’m actually in the Midwest but travel to NYC once/twice a year if that counts.
