Hello Everyone! At first, hope all are doing great! I know many of you be busy preparing for upcoming June exam. So i wouldn’t want to take much of your time. I just needed to know if anybody could help me out with L1 economics? I’m finding the content too overwhelming. Feels like i will never finish on time!!! I’ve just registered for Dec’15 exam and thought would start with Economics as i always liked it in my undergrad. I’m using the technique to read and understand a topic/reading 1st and then making summarized notes on it so that i may not forget. But then now looking at the content of it really scaring me off as there is so much of theory !! And one more thing is that am using the eBook, not the hard copy. So can anybody plz help me with any better or modified study techniques? I feel that only reading and understanding the content alone maynot help me as i might forget them at the end of every topic/reading. Much needed help. Thanks in advance! Oh…yes…all the best to all the June candidates!
Hi Muneera,
Econ is definitely an interesting area, no doubt about that. However, in the true spirit of Econ, let’s think about this in terms of efficient allocation of scarce resources such as time.
Econ is one of those topic areas that has a lot of content for 10% of the exam. If you find that going through Econ is slowing your study momentum, I would suggest first going through the other topic areas (such as FRA, Fixed Income and Equity) so that you can get some runs on the board. In particular, FRA is one section that will serve you well not only in terms of constituting 20% exam, but also aiding your understanding of Fixed Income and Equity.
By the way this tip was shared by the awesome Wiley instructor Darren Degraaf, who emphasizes focusing efforts on core cocepts first rather than getting bogged down by detail.
So with that in mind, once you’ve covered the more “bang-for buck” topics (FRA, Equity, Fixed Income, Ethics, Quant) let’s consider how to approach Econ.
Part of the reason that the text for Econ is long is that there are a fair number of things that need to be explained and understood, not merely memorized. I personally find videos very useful here. For example, when you look at the study text all you see is the end product of a model with multiple graphs and a long-winded description. But the power of videos comes to play when you’ve got a good lecturer who guides you through the whole model/ graph step-by step, explaining the “why”. Then after watching the videos I grab a whiteboard marker and explain to myself the entire model/framework from scratch. Finally, do questions to test your understanding - this is key. You will find with Econ that there are frequently reoccuring themes couched in different settings, eg: opportunity cost, marginal cost/benefit (utility), welfare,minimum/maximum points in graphs, substitutes/complements, Unemployement/Inflation/ Output. This should hopefully make it less overwhelming as you go through the curriculum.
All the best for Dec 2015 !!
Try to understand the readings but forget about really learning the material until you sit down and start doing problems. Don’t spend too much time reading any subject. By the time you get through the sessions you’ll like have forgotten much of what you’ve read/studied. Be sure to schedule lots of time to review the material before the exam. Lots of time = several weeks.
