No Fantasy Football at Fidelity

Ouch… http://sports.yahoo.com/fantasy/blog/roto_arcade/post/Investment-company-to-fantasy-owners-You-re-fi?urn=fantasy,208825

Come on, is that really surprising

I have a friend that works there and always thought he just didn’t want to FF and it was a convenient excuse. Apparently I was wrong and HR and IT at Fido really are that douchey.

The reason why they were fired wasn’t because of gambling, but because they weren’t gambling enough. Fidelity embarassed that buy in was only $20 rather than the usual $200,000.

And it begins…

I can’t read the link. Did people get fired for accessing a fantasy football site at work? Was it that they were gambling on work time? Either way, I don’t understand the company’s position. If the firm doesn’t want you accessing these sites during work hours they should block them with a firewall. I know I can’t access sports sites or social networking sites etc. Obviously any X rated sites are also off limits.

^^A guy got fired for getting an IM re: fantasy football. "[Pettigrew] said he never sent any fantasy football emails at work or using his work email address. But the investigators found two instant messages that had fantasy football-related material. “One of my buddies sent me something about how bad Trent Edwards(notes) was playing or something like that,” Pettigrew said. “So they called me in and talked to me for about 90 minutes on everything I ever knew about fantasy football.”

I was trying to impress everyone on AF by stating I have a friend who works at Fidelity. STFU already.

Sounds like they were looking to get rid of this guy for a while and this was the excuse. No way they would let a valuable employee go for a non-issue like that. He should take a constructive dismissal case and get some compensation.

I’d tend to agree, but it was actually a total of 4 guys who were fired

I help manage my girlfriend’s fantasy football team at her investment bank (unbeknownst to her colleagues). She watches some college football, but mostly just roots for her alma mater. The only NFL players she knows are Tom Brady (because she’s in love with him like every other female on this planet) and Marion Barber (because he has cool hair). Anyway, she’s in a 12-team PPR league and her team is 13-1; the next best team is 9-5. Playoffs start this week. I hope she doesn’t get booted from the firm if she wins her league… QB’s (start 1): Brett Favre, Donovan McNabb WR’s (start 3): Andre Johnson, Calvin Johnson, Donald Driver, Mike Sims-Walker, and Robert Meachem RB’s (start 2): Maurice Jones-Drew, Ray Rice, Rashard Mendenhall, Fred Jackson TE: Tony Gonzalez K: Nate Kaeding DEF: Minnesota

Numi, what aren’t you good at?

Haha - I wish that were always the case with fantasy football. For my own two teams, one of them was in fourth place entering the playoffs and the other didn’t make it. Here’s hoping that if my girlfriend runs the table the rest of the way, she’ll do something nice for me with her prize money. :o)

I traded Brett Favre for Reggie Bush in week 2. Didn’t think the old man would have such a season. It costed me a playoff spot.

That team is pretty flippin close to being nostradamus. Rice, Meachem, Walker and Medenhall with Favre on top wtf…

Yeah, Rice and Mendenhall were the only ones I drafted; the others were free agency picks! Just got lucky I guess…

I think it’s completely out of bounds to fire people for that. I agree with Carson that if they didn’t want people at the site - and it was becomming some sort of issue - then they should have just blocked the site. If they were just looking for an excuse to fire those people, that’s a different story, but I’m not really getting that vibe at this point. I just think that good, engaged employees aren’t going to focus on work 100% over the course of a day where you’re working 10 hours+. Unless you’re doing mundane brainless work, you need time to recharge and reinvigorate yourself over the of the day if you’re going to stay productive till 5-8pm.
