Syn 6 requires much larger scoops and had less protein per scoop than optimum nutrition. It does taste better. They both mix easily. I think ON is considered the standard for balancing cost, taste, and product. 2 scoops of ON is about the same size of one of syn6 and I think would yield 48 grams. Generally chocolate is the easiest flavor to get decent taste from. Muscle milk is the best tasting imo.
I have never taken protein shakes, or any supplement for that matter. I am lucky to have good negro genetics and did boxing and rugby for 9 years so I have always been in good shape. Do they actually do anything or is it just a placebo?
I tend to believe in the latter. When i was living in Europe i was forced to go without and i realized no losses. Then again, if you do not understand basic nutrition then perhaps it can be beneficial for your post workout meal needs to be comprised of certain features.
I have an on and off relationship with protein supplements and have tried many brands over the years, in addition to running carb/protein supplements like Accelerade or Endurox. I currently use Syntha-6 for gym and have good experiences so far. A few bullet points:
Yes, it tastes pretty good.
Protein to carb ration is a bit lower than some other brands. However, the importance of incremental protein is often overstated. If you take protein supplements in addition to eating a high protein diet, it’s likely that you are not absorbing all of it. You should try various protein types yourself, but keep away from the mindset that more protein is just better all the time.
It does not give me “lactose problems” like whey based proteins. This might or might not be important to you… Also, I have not noticed any acne issues with Syntha-6. This might be just due to my age though.
AfricaFarmer: Yes, there is a noticeable difference in performance and recovery time if you take protein shakes or other supplements right after exercise. However, you might get the same benefits from just eating normal food with high protein, like steak or chicken. I have not really done a lot of study on this though.
I use muscle milk individual containers. A 4 pack around here costs $7-$8 and each one contains 20g protein and other stuff. Taste is fine. Only threw up once from it (took it pre-workout and was high on adderall)
Beverly International, UMP (Ultimate Muscle Provider). Mix of Cassein and Whey proteins. One scoop of chocolate, 1 scoop of vanilla, mixed with coffee and ice (or half cold-brew coffee and water is even better). Tastes like a coffee ice-cream milkshake.
Beverly International is the best supplement company you have never heard of. They spend basically no money on advertising, their products sell themselves. And if you’ve ever been to the Arnold, they are company booth without the skantily clad women and flashing lights. Just men and women in Polo’s and Khaki’s who know thier stuff. Also, the products are very competitively priced as well. Netrition.com carries them. I’m a fan of their protein, multi-vitamin pack, and EFAs.
But along the lines of what Ohai was saying, there is no substitute for real food. I just do protein shake for breakfast when I don’t fee like making eggs. It’s quick and convenient. After workouts I eat real food… lean protein and high fiber vegitables.
So essentially it can be seen as an alternative if you have problems getting the right diet? Admittedly it can be difficult to take on enough protein if your body isn’t naturally big. People underplay how much of an impact diet has. Lots of excercise is most important but you will get where you need to be quicker if you get your diet right too.
I’m not really looking to get any bigger, I was just interested as i’ve never even tasted a shake before. When i was a kid I had a pretty good diet thanks to my parents, lots of chicken, fish, beans, milk and eggs, and I suppose combined with all the sport I was doing, I was getting results anyway and never needed to take supplements.
Protein shakes are convenient and efficient for most people. If you want to consume 30g of protein within 20 minutes after workout, it is easy to just drink the shake, rather than grill a steak or something. Supposedly, manufactured protein has some property that makes it easy for your body to absorb also, but this should be verified. Ultimately, “supplements” should be treated as such - they can help, but are not a substitute for a balanced diet.
All you muscle milkers should google this, it was enough to end my usage even though that stuff is the best tasting by far. Now I use Optimum Nutrition daily similar to Turd’s smoothie, and then for recovery I use a scoop or 2 of ON chocolate with a spoonful of PB, a banana, and some almond milk…perfect every time.
Upon doing further research it does seem that Optimum Nutrition gold standard whey offers better value for basically the same stuff as Syntha 6 Isolate which is what I have been using.
I’m not sure why I switched off Optimum Nutrition in the first place. Maybe I will go back to it next. But, I still have a lot more Syntha 6 Isolate to go before I run out. I try not to use it too much, since I don’t want to make the other meatheads at the gym look too tiny.
On another note, anyone here have suggestions on how to increase brain mass? Thanks.
