I know that most of the posters on this forum are very physically fit, muscular, Adonises with chiseled figures. So this is a good place to ask about your favorite protein shakes. I got a huge jar of whey protein called Six Star, it’s in black. Problem is, it tastes like moldy cardboard and has a ton of artificial sweeteners in it.
What are the best tasting protein shakes out there? Not best, but best tasting…
the key IMO is to get a really good mixer so you can add stuff that tastes good. I use a vitamix - the thing will pulverize anything. here’s my favorite post-swole shake:
.75 cup of coconut milk
.75 cup of almond milk
scoop of vanilla protein powder - i use cryosport whey protein. you can pick up a huge bag at costco pertty cheap
sprinkle some flax seeds & chia seeds
a big spoonful of plain greek yogurt
about a cup of frozen mixed berries
a big scoop of organic almond (or cashew or sunflower seed) butter
Syntha-6 has a really good taste and texture, but in my opinion contains too many fats and carbs (for instance, one scoop of the Chocolate Cake Batter flavor contains 14 grams of carbs and 9 grams of fat – in a “protein” powder – with 22 grams of protein coming from a mixed source. This means you get undesirable whey concentrates mixed in – ideally, you want only whey isolate or hydrosylate if you can get it. Lastly, one scoop of this has a whopping 200 kcals).
I would highly recommend the 1st Phorm Phormula 1 product series. Very low calorie, and all of them are coming from whey isolate and hydrosylates (the Fruity Loopy flavor, for instance, contains only a half a gram of fat and one carb, with the same 22 grams of protein you get from Syntha-6, except with 1st Phorm the protein is coming strictly from whey isolate/hydrosylate, for a total of 100 kcals. Therefore, you get the same quantity of protein, but higher quality, for exactly half the calories as Syntha-6). I also highly recommend the “CTC” flavor, which is designed to taste like Cinnamon Toast Crunch. If you mix the cereal flavor powders with milk for your post-workout shake, it tastes exactly like delicious cereal milk, if you are into that.
I’ve gone back and forth regarding protein shakes. Modern science will state whey isolate is supreme for a post workout but i’ve gone periods of eating a traditional meal post workout instead and never really realized any losses. Im starting to believe genetics play the most important factor in accordance to physique.
While on contemporary science, for the first time EVER i have to disagree with TF. ALthough flax and almond butter are healthy, I wouldnt consume such fats post workout but would save it for a period closer to bed.
WRT Turd - Personally, I have neither the time nor desire to put that kind of effort into a “post-swole shake”. That’s just me. But again, I’m also not training for the NFL, either.
I also think (and I think this is Palantir’s point)–if the shake tastes so bad that you’re not going to drink it, then what’s the point? It has to at least be palatable. (Which is why I drink Slim-fast + Syntha 6 for breakfast and lunch.)
I used to just get whatever was at the store. I don’t think it really matters that much unless you’re a professional. Just add some stuff to it to make it taste good (peanut butter was usually good, with a dash of yogurt, maybe some fruit). Unfortunately, I didn’t work out much last year and am a little flabby. Focusing on losing a little of that now.
I don’t know if they market this product in the States but this is the whey protein I use to use. It tastes really good, mixes well without a blender. Is relatively low in calories, only 1.5gs of fat and 2g’s of carbs for 27g serving.
I’ve stopped taking whey as I don’t weight train anymore. Instead I use BCAA’s like Scivation Xtend, which to me is perfect as it helps me stay mentally focused and I notice I don’t get fatigued or dehydrated as easily.
I use BSN Syntha-6 isolate, chocolate flavor. It’s very lean compared to the original Syntha-6. Good if you want to build muscle mass and recover faster, while also lessening the likelihood of becoming a McFatty compared with most other protein supplements that I have seen.
