I have an interview for an analyst position with a Real Estate Investment Fund, can you share some insights on what kind of questions to expect?
I previously interviewed at a RE fund, and in the first rounds I was asked a lot about my interests in the field and what made me choose RE over anything else (emphasis on fit seemed to be more here than in other roles for which I have applied).
RE is extremely broad, so find out what areas they focus on, e.g. geographies, commercial/residential/industrial, greenfield/brownfield, etc. RE is closely linked to many other sectors, macroeconomics, and demographics, so consider how these are all interrelated. When it comes down to valuations, consider key metrics (NOI, FFO) and learn the different methodologies for various sub-sectors (a home builder will be valued differently than a hotel). DCFs and Comp models are still common but you also see NAV and DDM models in this space.
Learn as much as you can about where the fund operates, come up with a particular (shared) interest of yours if you don’t have one already, and tailor your research based on them. Hope this helps - good luck!
Hey 911, thanks a lot for your help. I did the interview yesterday now I am waiting for their responce…
Hope you did well. What kind of questions did they ask you? Hopefully they asked you what you prepared for.
