when did DFW to Santiago become 13 hours?
^ Just feels that way in the back row.
Whatever the incline is, it was far enough that day to prevent me from reading a magazine or iPad, both of which I brought with me on the flight so I could have something to do. And I mean, literally, the magazine would not fit between my chest and their seat.
And if I may summarize Bromion’s point, “When I want the space behind me, then I paid for it and it belongs to me. When I want the space in front of me, then I paid for it and it belongs to me. In essence, this makes all space in the airplane mine, and anybody who disagrees is wrong and can go f— themselves. Otherwise, I will stab them in the neck with my diamond-encrusted Mont Blanc. None of this is up for debate.”
This is right. Any space directly in the chair that I paid for is mine, as is the reclining space behind my chair. The reclining space into my chair belongs to the person in front of me and that’s just the way it is. If you don’t like that, feel free to pay for my seat or lobby the airline industry for a change.
In terms of the magazine / iPad, that isn’t the other guy’s problem. Either get skinnier or buy a bigger seat, you have options. This is what I mean by personal responsibility. It’s not the other guy’s fault that you are too big to fit in a standard seat. People don’t need to accomodate you. Maybe they will by choice but they aren’t required to and shouldn’t be expected to.
For the record, I don’t actually recline my seat unless it’s an overnight flight. But it’s my right to do that if I want to.
“I hate facts, they get in the way of opinions” - Kanye West
airlines have reduced the distance between seats several times over in between the time they’ve replaced seats. so the recline currently does not leave as much space to the person behind as originally designed. the question of ability to recline is irrelevant. just because you can do something doesn’t mean you should do it.
Whether I should or shouldn’t do it out of courtesy isn’t the discussion at all.
I hope I get any one of you behind me during a future flight, I’m going to recline the sh-t out of the seat just for you LOL
bromion says “if you’re behind me and I want to recline my chair I’m going to do that.” Yet I believe he implied that I (a non recliner our of courtesy and respect for my fellow traveler behind me) am the selfish one.
Huh.
I hope i sit behind you sometime and you recline. I’ll be exercising my rights to the fullest extent. like changing the channel every few seconds on my screen with plenty of force and waiting for you to doze off to put up my tray with plenty of force, making sure it’s real secure.
From a purely game theoretic perspective, everybody should recline because this would be the only stable equilibrium that guarantees equal amount of space to the majority of the passengers. This is also the optimal strategy that maximizes your own comfort utility without being contingent on the choice made by the passenger in front of you (with the exception of higgmond).
Now, not all agents act in a rational manner, so it is understandable that you may choose to not maximize personal utility and forego the extra comfort out of ethical considerations for the passenger behind you. But by demanding that the passenger in front of you does the same, you are trying to offload some of the opportunity cost that you’ve paid by giving up your reclining rights in exchange for the benefit of taking the high moral ground. This not only makes you irrational, but also a hypocrite.
In conclusion, please do recline at all times but if you choose not to, embrace the cost of your personal sacrifice without seeking some form of compensation.*

How far above the tray table belongs to you? At somepoint, it intersects with the space into which the seat reclines.
It’s not selfish if I paid for it. If you want to pay for my flight you can tell me whether I can recline or not.
Dont’ forget to direct your A/C vent and reading light, which belong to you, so that they both hit him right in the head.
Just use basic common sense. Jeezuz. Yes you have the right to recline your seat (we are within our rights to do many things) but that doesn’t mean we should. Sometimes it is fine to recline such as when nobody is behind you or it is really late at night but other times we should not recline (tall person behind you, or someone wants to use their laptop or has a baby etc.). I mean can’t we just use basic common sense?
No, we can’t. We can only use things that we pay for and have the legal and inalienable rights for, like the space behind our chairs.
Simply for suggesting otherwise, you have proven yourself to be a socialist bastard. Consider yourself on watch by the House Un-American-Activies Committee.
Higgmond’s questions are the best.
Seems like this topic really hit a nerve with some folks. …
Perhaps the airline should have a variety of seats based on body type and all passengers should have to pay based on their body volume. Then everyone would have sufficient space.
I support paying by weight to get on the plane as opposed to by space. The real cost of a flight is fuel and more weight = more fuel.
this is the solution but the PC police would kill it.
