Research / Data Providers

I work for a relatively small investment management shop and am looking for a reasonably priced (ie, $1,000 or less per month) research/ data software package. Currently, I’m forced to scour the internet or contact an outside analyst for rudimentary data. Not only is it time consuming, I’m forced to use data from a variety of websites which results in very little consistency. I’m hoping to find something that I can rely on to be accurate and somewhat robust. I’ve searched older threads here and quickly realized that FactSet and Capital IQ are way too expensive (a previous thread had them costing $36,000 and $45,000 annually for one license). I saw StockVal and Thomson mentioned frequently. I think I saw that Thomson runs at about $12,000 per year. I’m not sure of the cost for StockVal but people seemed to be relatively happy with the product. Any thoughts on the Stock Investor Pro product from AAII? Obviously, cost isn’t an issue there but I’m curious if it’s more likely to be a waste of $250. I figured I’d check for suggestions here before proceeding to contact a provider. As soon as they get your number, they never stop calling. Thanks for any input offered.

What kind of data do you need? Here are some thoughts. AAII data is pretty cheap and basically comes from the Thompson database IIRC. I found out about it from VirginCFAHooker, who has mastered the screening interface (I find it kinda clunky). A number of people have also talked about Zack’s Research, which I think costs between $1.5k and $2k/year. This site advertises FetchXL, which I think costs around $4k/year. I don’t know how good it is. I can grab historical data from Yahoo and MSN using XLQ, which is pretty inexpensive at $80/$120 for the regular/Pro version. That’s a one-time cost, but you have to pay after 1 year if you want updates to the software (the software continues to work as-is without a subscription). I find it useful, but I often feel a bit awkward about getting my data from Yahoo/MSN. If your trading frequency is low, it’s not too bad though. XLQ will also connect to the AAII database and a few subscription data sources. My main issue with XLQ is that I find it difficult to get dividends for total return calculations - usually I just end up doing them by hand, which is a pain in da butt.

I’m thinking of using a combination of NinjaTrader and OpenTick.com. It’s cheap but I haven’t tried it yet so I can’t vouch for it.

whats with all these small investment management shops? whos money are they managing, there cant be that many wealthy individuals? or are they managing mom and pop?

Something which I can trust to provide relatively accurate fundamental data, valuation metrics, and consensus estimates, if possible. For example, I’ve found it extremely difficult to find historical forward P/Es for individual names. That sort of thing isn’t as helpful now (who knows how accurate estimates are) but in a stronger market it has some value. A trailing P/E is useless for a fast growing small/mid cap name. I use Yahoo! Finance for a lot but just realized that the trailing P/E is based on GAAP earnings. That’s the kind of stuff that drives me nuts and makes me wonder if other metrics are calculated this way. Also, do you know if any of these sources include metrics for various indexes (S&P 500 and Russell 1000 Growth, in particular)? Thanks a lot.

check Thomson Baseline. Not sure of the cost, can’t be that much as you can customize the features you want included.

Does anyone have experience with Thomson One Investment Management and Baseline? What’s the difference. Seems odd that Thomson Reuters would offer two different products.

I only have exp with Baseline, what is Thomson One?

I’ve seen larger organizations where Capital IQ licenses run just $10,000 each per year, but that is with a minimum number of licenses. I’m not sure how CIQ treats small shops. It may be worth a phone call enquiry. We have saved countless hours on fundamental research with CIQ. They typically provide a 30 day test run for free as well.

Also, do you know if any of these sources include metrics for various indexes (S&P 500 and Russell 1000 Growth, in particular)? The S&P 500 should not be too hard to find …but Russell and MSCI charge for access tothat information . Even with bloomerg professional service I can’t pull up that information wihtout having to pay additional fees.

Baseline does. I believe its something likt RTZ for Russell, SPX for S&P…not sure as its been awhile. I am sure there are other indices…

Used Thomson Baseline 3-4 years ago, mainly for quick earnings releases, statements, peers P/E, conference call transcripts, charting etc, Costed ~ $1-$2k/y as I remember. Haven’t not had any interaction since then.
