good luck
Saw a study where they submitted 5,000 of the same resumes, with one having the name Tyrone on it and the other had Tom, and the Tyrone one got 33% fewer responses.
Hmm, is this right? What type of jobs are these people applying for? Not sure about everyone else, but I actually prefer immigrant sounding names because I like the first generation work ethic. Not that Jose or Tyrone are necessarily immigrants. Overall I probably lean toward Asiany sounding people all else equal (Caucasian here). Anyone who has an unpronounceable foreign first name with an English name in paranthesis next to it will probably make a good first impression on me.
^ I think someone with that style of thinking is extremely rare. Most people simply want relatable people they think they understand, can communicate with, and get along with.
^ That’s short sighted. I want the candidate that delivers the most value with the fewest headaches. I’m willing to deal with a little language gap if the guys ideas result in me having a bigger bonus. I’m not ok with people that don’t understand western workplace norms and culture. Some behaviours I’ve seen are wholly incompatible with the way I do business. Like the cultural trait of one group (most working in the west don’t do this, but some do) of lying rather than saying no or admitting an error. Can’t stand it, would fire someone over that. I’ve heard more extreme examples of cultural clashes but have yet to see many of those myself.
^ 90% of the jobs out there have someone doing the hiring that A. does not get a bonus based on the performance of their staff and/or B. the job is not that complicated and does not require some advanced and rare set of skills or knowledge. I think thats a very finance-oriented mindset.
Most people just want someone they can get along with and wont be overly weird or annoying. Most people are interested in half assing things. Obviously, if the foreign or odd candidate delivers some unmatched value compared to others, then people are more likely to overlook it. But for most standard jobs that aren’t overly complicated, personality & ease of getting along with > slightly smarter and wierd with communication and cultural problems.
^ Just to add to the above, many people doing the hiring are also insecure, and they wouldn’t want someone that can be a threat to them. Or wouldn’t want to hire someone that is so ambitious and competent that they would be gone in a year and the manager would have to reluctantly start another hiring process. What’s good for the firm or the manager’s bosses isn’t necessarily good for the manager.
^ true
Very good comments. That’s why interviews are so hard. Being ambitious and competent is not always a good thing in interviews. Sometimes it’s not about your qualification, it’s about finding the right spot or right people to work with.
This is only true if you’re trying to work for a bad company.
^ You are underestimating the time required to hire and train someone from skratch. The 2 duties that mangers hate the most.
