Nothing to see here folks! Everything is allowed in love, war and politics. If the tables were turned, gop would be crying while the dems would be doing everything in their power to push through the nomination. Don’t hate the player, hate the game!
Didn’t the republicans do this prior to Obama leaving office? As in they were crying bloody murder if he appointed somebody to the Supreme Court prior to the election? Could be wrong there and US judicial history isn’t my realm, but I recall something to that effect. So agree, this is all politics and would go both ways.
I think they only need 50 since a tiebreaker would go to Pence.
If Republicans push this through, which I think they will, the new “unwritten” rule will officially be that you can only appoint Supremes when you have the presidency and the senate. Therefore, when there’s divided gov’t, as is often the case, open seats will pile up and when one party takes both houses they will appoint seats in one full swoop.
Think about it, let’s say Trump fills RBG’s seat next week and wins in November but the Republicans loses the Senate. If another seat opened next year do you really think the Dems would hold a hearing to fill it? They would just let it sit empty until they got the presidency even if it took three years. We could eventually have a scenario where the presidency is on the line with 2-3 seats up for grabs.
well vacant seats in supreme court were more common in the past. the median right now is 70 days, but the longest time it took to appoint someone was 841 days. anyways he has the senate votes. california
to appoint a new supereme court judge. they need is a simple majority or 51 votes otherwise the dems can filibuster. (it used to be 60 but rules were changed in 2017)
If the Republicans push through the confirmation, Biden wins, and the Democrats take the Senate, they could expand the Supreme Court and take control. The number of justices isn’t fixed.
This is a great idea. The Democrats need to stop putting up their dukes like a 1920’s boxer, expecting a gentlemanly fair fight. The Republicans have been groin-kicking and knife-pulling for years. Time for the Democrats to spit a few teeth out, buck up and fight back just as dirty.
^Justice Kavanaugh would probably disagree with you.
theyre even working with Russia
boof kavanaugh or devils triangle kavanaugh?
He definitely would, but Kavanaugh’s record is filthy. These justices are supposed to be the best of us, so sure, the bar is very high. I think questions on whether he forced himself on someone, and whether he remembers it, are fair questions. That’s not fighting dirty at all. But you are a Midland, TX-based Marine (I’d say ex-Marine, but then I know what you’d say after that). Typical Texan thinking on the matter has heads buried further in the sand than those oil pump jacks you can see from your window every day. And I say this with love, Greenie.
^No, you’re 100% correct. This is the second-reddest county in the reddest state in the US. Off the top of my head, I can only think of two people in this area who claim to be Democrats. (I for the record, am pretty staunchly in “moderate libertarian” camp, so I’m probably left of Midland, but somewhere in the middle overall.)
But overall, I wouldn’t say that the Republicans are dirtier than the Democrats. Republicans didn’t assassinate Merrick Garland’s character based on the claim that “he assaulted me 30 years ago. I don’t remember where I was or how I got there or any other details, but I clearly remember it was him.” I don’t recall Republicans ever burning Obama or Biden in effigy, like Democrats have done to Bush and Palin. Republicans didn’t impeach Obama over some “politics as usual”-type backdoor deal. (Not saying it was right or justifiable–but not something worth impeaching over, IMHO. Obama wouldn’t have been impeached over it.) We won’t know if they would have ever gone after Killary because of her missing 30,000 e-mails on her private server. And let’s not forget about any Chicago politician, ever.
Let’s keep it real–the Democrat party even cheats on itself. Remember when the Party itself conspired to get Killary the nomination instead of Bernie?
No–I don’t think the Republicans are dirtier than the Democrats. I think they’re both a bunch of clowns that are fighting to the death over a stupid turf war–and the open Supreme Court seat just happens to be the turf-du-jour.
republicans are paid in rubles LOL

First of all, the political duopoly in the US is pretty damaging. At least they used to collude and some legislation could get done, but now it’s basically a 180 on policy every 4 to 8 years. Maybe it’s the least bad option right now, but any sort of progress is so inefficient…akin to a rocket launching in a zig zag pattern. I hope we have enough fuel. Anyway…
- Republicans did not do anything with Garland. They didn’t even consider the nomination, which lasted a record 290 odd days.
- The Reps action in #1 contributed directly to the ugly nature of the hearings on Brett, PJ, Squee and Donkey Dong Doug. Brett also came off terribly here with the crying over the calendars thing. Keep yourself together, man!
- Please point me to where Obama has any analogue to Trump’s lawlessness. Obama would have been impeached if he did anything approaching the below laws Trump has broken while using the presidency as protection:
*The first is obstruction of justice and abuse of law enforcement institutions and personnel.
- Violated emoluments clause repeatedly
- Incited violence at his campaign rallies and in other public speech
- Campaign finance violations stemming from paying off a porn star that he raw-dogged while his wife was home with his newborn baby
- His attempts to leverage the power of the presidency to cause investigation and prosecution of political opponents.
- There were tons of investigations on Hillary when she was SoS. Trump tried to get Sessions to direct the DoJ to investigate her when she wasn’t even a public servant. There is no doubt in my mind she would have been investigated early and often if she became President.
a government gridlocked in policy might actually be a good thing. it lets capitalism run its course.
I thought the same and then I researched and found that the quorum for the senate is 50. So since Reps have 53 senators, they will establish the quorum.
However, in my opinion, Dems should not take their seats in both the judiciary committee or for the voting in order not to legitimize the process.
But since they are bunch of pussies, that will not happen.
They are talking about how Kamala will roast her during the commitee hearings.
So what? Dude, even if you uncover that Barret is working for Russia, Republicans will vote her to the court anyway. And Dems are talking about roasting her.
