Send equity research report with job application?

Do you guys think it’s a step too far to send an equity research report that you’ve written with an application for an equity analyst position?

I’m condsidering doing it, but on the other hand all they’re asking for a is a cover letter and a resume and I don’t want to give the impression that I can’t follow a simple order on what to include in an application.

Thoughts?

depends. if your resume doesn’t say you are a great candidate and you are likely to be rejected at first sight, definitely send it if you have fitting experience, don’t send until later they reach back out

I used to attach one in way back when. I doubt it ever got looked at. It was never brought up when I did get called for an interview.

Ah ok. Fair enough, I won’t bother then - it’s an entry level role anyway and I have relevant experience, as well as the advantage of having a connection already within the company - who I met with recently to talk about working for the firm and breaking into equity research.

Thanks for the advice guys. Much appreciated. I knew I could count on the vets here at AF!

Depends on how good your write-up is. If it’s junk, you’ll be rejected. If it’s great, people will look at you no matter what background or planet you come from.

Suggest you take a look at my hedge fund and equity research interview series on Mergers & Inquisitions, and make your write-up as good as it can be.

It probably ended up in HR’s hands and they put it in the recycling bin. The hiring manager never got to see it.

With a little bit of due diligence you can email it directly to the sr of the sector they’re recruiting for. I’d pitch something not within their coverage space. Anyways, I can see this adding value if done properly

I received one for an admin position. It was too much but stood out. Too bad none of our managers were looking for paid help, otherwise I would have forwarded it on.
