Struggling with Quants

Hey guys, I started on quants last week and spent about 12 hours going through the Schweser book. A lot of it went straight it and straight out, to say I’m struggling is an understatement!

How long did you guys spend on it & what structure did you go for? I’m very conscious of time as I have only covered about 40% of the material (including quants)

Thanks for your help guys…

I read reading 11 yesterday. Its not tough but there are so many terminologies which make it confusing.

Even EOQ questions are very tricky. Making notes now of all the small notes

quant is tough for someone who is not very familiar with statistics and uncertainty data & judgmenet, which unfortunately is the category that you fall under.

practice practice practice is the best advice I can give for someone with your background.

there are three portions in the exam: linear regression, multiple regression, and time series.

All three have the same basic principles that you need to understand. You have to wrap your head around how a normal distribution works, why is there a standard deviation and what does it represent, what is the rejection region about, what is the t critical vs t calculated, how are they used to make a decision. I think this is a good starting point.

Then when you truly understand a normal distribution, get to know the table that shows what are the three common errors, what do they mean, how to detect them, how to fix them.

this will not be easy, sorry if I am not being clear, as I probably think about these concepts completely differently than you do.

Good news is its just 5 % smiley

I have no trouble with Quant, but found this useful and thought I should give props to cfa_mixer for pretty much breaking quants down to its basic structure.

OP: take this skeleton and add meat to it.

I was in your shoes…its really about looking at problems, and knowing the terms. Just keep grinding it out. Look at the forums for answers to your questions, use some study notes etc. You’ll get it.

Try Elan’s free QM videos. I thought they were very useful

Count me in. I read the quant book i fall asleep, watching elan elan video also falling asleep. Managed only one los for 4 days that i ditched and move to corpfin as i only finished fra so have many los to cover and this one is dragging me down i will go back to quant after i finish all the other materials

Yeah when i started QT for first time i fell asleep in 15 minutes cheeky. But soemhow managed to finish reading 11 in 2 days . Now today i will start with reading 12

Vicky, are you a full time student?

No i am working from 9-5.30

thanks guys some great ideas there. I think I’m just going to have to keep my head up, and grind questions out until i understand what’s going on!

Props to you for putting in the dedication!

First mistake is using Schweser for Quant. Reading the chapters in CFAI text gives you more of a background on where the calculations/problems with normal distribution/time series data comes from. Schweser material is just notes on the CFA text. It doesn’t make sense to rely solely on someone else’s notes - it doesn’t mean that it will help you understand everything fully. Take the time, put in the effort - it will be worth it.

Will finish reading 12 today by doing EQO questions. Then by sunday try and wrap the last reading and quants.

I must say atleast syllabus is much lesser in QT this time unlke last time where the probability sucked

I thought quant was really hard at first, but once you grasp the Anova table and what it means, everything seems kinda straightforward.

Arif has explained very well in his videos the annova concepts and others . Quite happy. Today will finish CFA EOQ and then proceed to time series

ditto

I recommend doing Quant last - it is bad value. I find it difficult and it will likely be one of the smaller sections on the test.
