I am facing a couple issues with the BA II Plus calculator as follows. Just want to see if it is just my calculator or it is a well known problem: (1) My calculator gives me wrong answers sometimes. When I hit 2ND-RESET-ENTER and redo the problem it gives me the correct answer this time around. Is there a trick to this or I am doing something wrong? Am I supposed to clear out the memory of previous cash flows after every problem? If yes, how???please help. (2) During TVM problems where I am trying to calculate the value of N, the calculator gives me ERROR 5…for example: If $5000 is invested in a fund offering a rate of return of 12% per year, approximately how many years will it take for the investment to reach $10,000? I DO IT LIKE THIS : FV = 10,000 PV=5000 I/Y=12, CPT N=…and I get ERROR 5 Could someone help please? thank you NG
1.) You do need to clear out all cash flows before each calculation. This can be done by hitting 2nd-CLR WORK once you are in the cash flow register (i.e. after hitting CF) 2.) You need to put a negative sign in front of either the PV or FV in order to not get the error. This sign can technically be interpretted as a cash outflow, but for all intents and purposes, you can ignore it as long as you understand what’s really going on in the calculation.
I had the same problem before. I wish Schweser add the negative sign in front of either the PV or FV on the book. This will save me at least 30 minutes.
