Just curious…what would you say are the top 5 investment firms to work for and why (as an equity analyst)?
SAC, Cerberus, Fortress, DE Shaw, Bridgewater simply because they are headed by brilliant managers.
Who says there’s no such thing as a stupid question?

So was LTCM, an to an extent, Bear. Lol. That’s no reason to say they are the best, rather, look to track record for more than 10+ years.
SAC can hardly be called an investment firm. They just trade in and out of stuff.

I mean so many big names. And it doesn’t have to be confined to hedge funds. One could argue “Dan Och is the man…” so let’s throw in OZ, and how about Farallon, Lone Pine, etc. This is a pointless exercise. And you probably can’t get employed by any of them. No offense meant to be taken. Investment firm is too broad. What’s your orientation. Fundamental value vs. growth? LT vs. Short-Short Term? etc. And yeah SAC = trading not investing DE Shaw is quantative in nature - they do not invest Bridgewater produces better research more than anything else
my gripe with this question is that the top 5 are probably companies you have not heard of yet. It’s better (and probably more lucrative) to build than to consolidate. I suppose if you narrow it to top 5 established firms… but I still don’t like the question for reasons cited above
best question ever
There’s no such thing as a stupid question. Just stupid people.
Whats wrong with the question…its meant to be open ended…just trying to get peoples opinion of various firms in the industry and why they do or do not care for certain firms.
chill miguel, you need the skin of a pachyderm in this forum. remember, finance folks are think they are the smartest human beings alive, and can judge others. shefrin & other behavioral theorists calls it various names: overconfidence bias, confirmation bias, groupthink, etc. i just call it the result of poor parenting, immaturity, and just being a shitty human being not worth losing composure or peace of mind over. the true greats will always show decency and humility (buffett is a good example), but the rest will be who they are at the core. tune out the jerks, identify and interact with the decent ones, and you’ll get what you want out of this thing.

You are way off the mark. Honestly, what would he learn from someone saying: 1. Cerberus 2. SAC etc. ? He’ll learn more from the list of reasons why his question is a poor one. Not being nice about it is secondary. It’s natural to expect abuse. We’re tired of studying in the evenings, the rest of the world doesn’t always recognise our genius, and we’re all shockingly underpaid. We’re angry people on the AF.
Jackson Steinham, JT Marlin & Gardiner Ross
Pierce & Pierce

Some good trivia. First one is Bud Fox’s firm in the hit film “Wall Street”. Any takers on the final one, I wouldn’t expect our friends south of the border to get this one…
I’d say all the hedge funds that shares your views on the world market and investing would be considered top. In terms of academic and critical thinking compatibility look for those kind of firms. If your question was pertained more towards the firm culture and structure, I think that depends on individual preference. Most hedge funds do not have a rigid vertical structure but that is directly related to the size of the firm as well. The bigger the firm the greater the chances of having a structure. Hope that helped. I personally don’t have a top 5 of my own.
>We’re angry people on the AF. That explains a lot…a lot of crap and deep wisdom from the same mouth.

can’t believe no one’s mentioned Stratton Oakmont
