Trading Assistant Interview

Ok, so I’ve started putting my name back in the hat after about a year of not applying anywhere. I have an interview next week for a trading assistant. This is my second interview with a trading desk. But the first one I messed up so bad about 1.5 years ago. Any tips would be appreciated. If anyone can even provide any specifics about what traders do, that would be appreciated. I don’t know if this has any relevance but no one on the trading desk has an MBA or CFA. I passed L1 and will take L2 in June. On the other hand most, if not all, on the research/pm team have CFA & MBA.

Traders dont care about CFA. And honestly they dont really need it. Make sure u know whats happenning in the market… Thats more important to them than knowing how to calculate FCF BUT again, it all depends what kind of shop and desk it is… Good luck

What kind of trading desk is this? Different sorts of desks can be completely different. Post the job description here if possible.

I don’t want to post the job description. Someone on AF actually once applied to a job I posted behind the scenes and even e-mailed me later for tips! This is with a large mutual fund company. The group deals with global equities and domestic all-cap & small/mid. The job description mentioned FX as well. The role entails analyzing trade data (not more specific than that), transaction costs, execution, etc.

Read up on the Tiger Woods scandal and talk about how its your favorite story of the year. Mention how great your are at getting coffee in the am and how many cupcakes you can fit in your mouth. The rest is relative.

I used to be a portfolio administrator aka Trading Assistant. My job was to support the trade desk and reconcile pending trades. I’d confirm that various portfolio allocations were handled from the day before. Lots of b!tch work. What kind of trader is this? I worked for a non-discretionary trader whom just took orders from PMs, which was also b!tch work. VWAP was something the trader constantly looked at. This may be a term to become familiar with.

You should brush up on your trading and settlements jargon. Read a bit about the NYSE, NASDAQ, ECNs, brokers, order types, market hours for various asset types, trading algorithms, VWAP, TWAP, dark pools, opening/closing cross, aftermarket trading, and anything else that might seem relevant. Since this is for a mutual fund, the trading desk probably cares most about best execution, so you want to know all of these operational terms. Also, a lot of traders tend to talk quickly and loudly, so don’t be caught off guard like that. Good luck with your interview.

The birds are singing, flowers are blooming, and topher’s going on an interview. All is right in the world again.

Funniest sh!te I read all day.

http://www.analystforum.com/phorums/read.php?1,802933,802933#msg-802933 The above is the job in reference to the sneak attack. I asked for advice in this thread, and the backstabber found my email address in another thread and emailed me under the guise of providing me guidance. “Oh so you’re interviewing with [Company]? Well I know someone there and you should do this and that.” One week later (did not yet know the result): He emails me again and says, “Hey so I applied to that job and now have a phone interview. Do you have any other info about the position that maybe I could use?” I didn’t really say much and tried to extract money out of him by selling him some excel modeling books.

Is said backstabber still on the forum? Did they get the job?

Maybe it was that KJH.

No I don’t think he posts. He’s a lurker. He’s located in the same city as me so there aren’t too many people on here that it could have been. He sent me his resume too. I have his name, I know where he works (worked at the time), etc. I may have actually deleted his info. His resume was underwhelming. If I didn’t get the job, he certainly didn’t get it.

That’s hilarious. If you really wanted to get back at the guy, you could post his name here so everyone can stalk him.

Post his resume as public on monster so he gets all those crap insurance sales and accounting temp position calls and emails. I posted my resume like that by accident once. I probably got 3 calls from Aflac each day wanting me to sell insurance.

Post that resume over here dude.

i bet he still trolls and his scared that you will post his resume. i wouldnt post his resume though. just know that people like him, backstabbers, will not make it far and will always be hated on
