What exactly is Institutional Equity Sales ?

pushin equity products to institutional investors bro. I think the name pretty much sums it up

haha I should have been more specific. Is it products or strategies or asset allocations etc… ?

I have a friend who is in IES. Basically he sells research to institutional investors (buyside firms, HFs etc.). Great gig if you can work for a reputable firm. He basically gets paid a handsome salary and bonus to entertain clients all day.

they come up with trading/investment ideas for the products they are trying to sell and pitch these ideas to their clients.

Depends on what your product is. In the mutual fund world, institutional sales focuses on DB plans, foundations, endowments, gigantic DC plans, and consultants.

Basically, if your trader wants to buy a lot of some stock, you go out and tell clients why your “research” shows that it’s a good idea to sell, and vice versa.

prison investing

Huh ? It’s about selling research ? Isn’t it about placing new equity offerings ?

I guess it could involve new offerings, but generally, it does not. And they don’t sell research - they use research to help sell equity products.

And they don’t sell > research - they use research to help sell equity > products. They slip some other information too along with research, things you won’t find on research. Though everything is public info, like… what’s the experience and track record of new manager a firm just hired in turning around failing business units, who’s going to lunch with whom, what broker dealer community is upto, are they scared of what, who is buying what, who is shorting what… etc etc… you won’t find all that in research reports.

To the OP, Alucards answer is the best. You asked a broad question and you got a broad answer. The answer to your second question is it could be all of the above, i.e. selling, products, stragegies, research, etc.
