What to stockpile before a hurricane?

As most of you know, there is a big hurricane approaching the East Coast in the next couple days. Hurricanes, especially “Frankenstorms” as they were, are not meant to be taken lightly. Therefore, what are some things you would stockpile before a hurricane?

You get points for recommending practical and useful items. Special brownie points for recommending something funny, impractical or otherwise useless under any circumstance other than hurricanes.

Here’s what I’ll be loading up on:

  • Water

  • Fresh fruit and non-perishable “staples”

  • Extra batteries for flashlight

  • Battery-powered boombox – need to keep the music in the apartment going if power runs out

  • Neon track jacket, headband and linoleum floor cover – if subway lines get suspended, I plan to put on some of my favorite 80’s breakdance tunes and see what b-boy skills I still have after years of sitting in a humble cubicle

I remember reading that Walmart stocks extra strawberry pop tarts before hurricanes because they are one of the first items to sell out. A million rednecks can’t be wrong so load up!

Last year I bought a solar panel kit at Costco that charges mobile devices for when the power goes out in southern california due to blackouts. I think it’s called a Nomad. It’s nice being able to call, text or surf AF when everyone else is playing board games.

Good luck and be safe!

Yeah, I was going to say… other than food and water, you need something to stay connected to the outside world. The most basic is a radio and batteries… or maybe one of those hand crank radios. Something to charge mobile devices is also good. There are adapters that let you plug normal batteries into your phone (like below).

hmmm…porn?

If so, it will have to be low tech: magazines and candles.

I live in Louisiana, so I am a pro at this. You need liquor and board games added to that list. Trust me it’s a necessity

Good luck out there, East Coasters

Also fill the tub uo with water so you can flush the toilet

21december here we go

New York City may have two hurricanes in two years. Thats something new.

I feel like I’m not taking this seriously enough, though. I’m not stocking up hugely on stuff, though I expect the power could be out for 6-12 hours or so.

i remember ppl stockpiling for the milenium bug…mainly spam…a bit too salty in my opinion…but not as bad as ppl make it out to be.

In 1998, there was a catastrophic ice storm in my hood. Power was out for a whole week in most places.

Generators were in short supply. Once the ice storm was finished, many places were selling generators at double the price. They sold like hot potatoes. It would have been great to short them at the time.

I thought y’all would be stocking up on guns & ammo before hitting the poptart aisle. Priorities people!

No, seriously though, just get the bare essentials:

  • Beer
  • 10 gallon cowboy hat
  • Paddle & Ball
  • Porn

A 40 pound bag of dog food. This will keep you from starving to death yet not allow you the ability to eat because you are bored.

I’m with Bchad. I’m really not making a big deal out of this. If worst comes to worst I’ll rob Numi of his supplies. Better add a gun to your list bud.

The last hyped big hurricane that was hitting NY was a sad pathetic joke. I loaded up on tons of water, food, and supplies, and nada.

I actually pray the power and subways all shut down for days this time, so I can finally get a break from work.

My bro-in-law bought a genset in preparation for Y2K bug. Nothing happened & he’s still keeping the genset. Don’t think it’s ever been started.

Toilet paper, hand sanitizer, and an HCB.
