Get the black vergin. Is very nice. I like.

I think the black one is the “TI BA II Plus Professional Financial Calculator”, which matches one of two approved calculators on the list of approved calculators for the CFA exams (the other one being the Business Analyst one). The silver one is the “TI BA II Plus Professional ADVANCED Financial Calculator”. I’m not sure if this one is approved (it’s also almost twice as expensive as the black pro calculator).

I use the BA II plus… the most basic one. Have no idea what extra functions the Professional version has, but I imagine you don’t need it. Most people I see using the BA II plus as well.

I don’t like the professional version because the keys are “sticky” in comparison to the plus model.

Bought the pro version but the button pressing on it sucked. Seriously the buttons felt like i had to really mash it to regiater the key press. Bought a regular ba ii plus and used that for the exam.

Can confirm: buttons on the Pro version suck. Only benefit is calculation of Discounted Payback Period in L1. Would go for regular one if retaking.

I went for the hp 12c specifically because I read a lot of negative reviews about the quality of buttons on the TI calculator. Supposedly buttons are brutal on both the current black ba-II plus pro virgin and its silver “milf” predecessor. Even for the regular ba-II plus, I read some reports about fast typing not being very reliable and having to check to make sure all keystrokes registered. No idea how true any of this is, but if multiple people are saying this i’d rather not take the chance. Better to pick the right calculator the first time and stick with it instead of getting the “easier” one and having to change later. RPN is not at all difficult to learn anyway. In response to op’s actual question this might shed some light http://edspi31415.blogspot.co.uk/2014/03/ba-ii-plus-professional-silver-2004-vs.html

depends where they are made… i have 2 12c’s both made in china. the last one - a ‘30th anniversary edition’ didn’t even work when i got it out of the plastic wrap. i had to bend the battery contact to make it work… and on both the keys stick and seem to get some double strokes which flip the display to 0.0000000…

whatever you decide, buy several…

(if you are starting out, look on ebay for ‘made in usa’ versions since these are much better quality, even if they look a bit beat up)

Ah right I see, sounds terrible also.

I have presumably the most recent platinum, made in phillipines… hope for the best?

I bet manufacturers of exam approved calculators could actually boost overall sales by agreeing to increase failure rates with purposely more shoddy components. Buy another when yours fails because you have to, and buy a spare just incase because you kind of have to.

BA II plus

Have a 12C 25th and 30th. Like both but my first 25th bit the dust… was acting flaky, tried cleaning with denatured alcohol, and that turned it into a paperweight. Bought another one and it’s perfect. Try to keep them in the cover to keep dust, etc from the switch contacts.

Don’t listen to anyone here that say anything other than the Hp12. I’m already on my 4th one because…oh wait. I guess if money is no object.

More Charterholders use HP-12C, while more candidates use BA II Plus

TI BA II Plus vs. Plus Professional, I’d definitely recommend the former. I had both shipped to me and the Plus Professional’s buttons are hard to press and thus register, something you don’t want to be worrying about during the exam.

The overall lay-out of the Plus Professional is also a bit dated compared to its ‘lesser’ version. The Plus (newest one) mixes up different colors for the buttons such as 0-9, TVM functions, 2nd button, etc. Makes for quick calculations when you know where to find what.

You mean those charterholders above the age 60 who don’t know how to use a desktop computer and think Excel is a verb?

LOL. Yelling out “I want my stock certificates!”

I prefer the ones where the keys are slightly softer.

The metallic one is a complete pain to deal with.

Just make sure that they have the same functions.

The best calculator is the one you know how to use habitually.
