Is it used in conjunction with BB or instead of it? Looks pretty meaty.
We use it in conjunction with BB. It’s better than BB at some things, but it depends on what you’re doing. For real-time stuff and following markets, I think BB is better. For performance attribution, tracking portfolios, and screening I think Factset’s better.
Factset options and FI is crap, as far as I can tell, so BB is must if you work with those instruments.
FactSet’s strength is definitely in equities and portfolio analysis. In my experience it is the strongest product for working with time series data and mixing data of different frequencies but as mentioned above the FI and options historically were weaknesses.
Agreed.
Anybody know if there is a web-based type app that can give someone exposures/training to BB or factset?
I use both BB and Factset. I prefer Factset hands down.
i use factset for equities and reuters extra for FI. i think factset is suited for time series, but i saw that bb is more updated when it comes to consensus estimates for example.
What do you guys do that allows you to play around with FactSet? I don’t use it, but it looks pretty cool (for equities & portfolio analysis).

Agreed - BB is less user friendly vs FactSet on the PF analysis and screening and comps and all that, but FactSet cant touch BB’s options/derivatives and FI.
Agree with jmh530. FactSet is great, but don’t see one using it instead of BBG unless they are not using any real time and/or fixed income derivative info. FactSet Pros: -Anything equity related, including quality of data -Sec filings, search capabilities -Time series -Can add third party databases -Quickly build chart books, company info -Integrate excel codes with screens (e.g. if a company is sells widgets and is U.S. listed then sum their ltm revenue figures) -has data for dead/delisted companies -After three users you can add FactSet users for relatively cheap FactSet Cons -Slow -Crashes sometimes, especially excel add in -Event calendar is weak compared to BBG, econ calendar takes a few minutes to update -Real time data is weak compared to BBG -Fixed income/deriv is weak -have to pay for news feeds -They don’t build pages that are relevant to current events (for example, BBG built the world credit crisis screen) -Have to pay a good deal to get most econ data series -Have to pay to get a lot of index-related info -Not allowed to share ( this can be a plus too :))
Anyone use CapIQ? I’ve used factset and bloomberg for several years but a few months ago switched to Capital IQ and I use it almost exclusively now. Fantastic application. I only really use it for equity research though, nothing extremely sophisticated.
