Recently got an email for a real estate research position I applied 3 months ago asking for a write-up sample.
I don’t have any real estate industry background, is there any resource where I can look at some real estate research samples to get an idea?
I plan to write a research report about REITS company using top down approach, starting with industry analysis, calculating valuation using relative valuation, analyzing FFO/AFFO multiples, then company analysis based on the ratios and outlook of the economics/industry.
Does it sound good?
das too much work. i would juss send them something i did in the past.
A quick google search got me this:
https://www.reit.com/sites/default/files/portals/0/PDF/Morningstar-Report-REITs-and-Private-Equity-Real-Estate-Funds-2011.pdf
If you have a Scottrade account, or something similar they tend to offer free research reports as part of their services. That sounds like a good approach to me. From what I understand in these types of reviews they are mostly judging your grammar and layout of your report and are less concerned with if your actual projection is accurate or not so long as you have good logic and data behind your assumptions.
Good luck with the process.
I’m not in the real estate invement indusry and my current job doesn’ envolve writing analysis reports. So I don’t have antyhing that I can present other than those papers from school long time ago.
Yes, it was a lot work. Spent a whole weekend based on top down approach and ratio analysis as I mentioned. Hardest part was data collection. Had to go through their 10Ks to find each data I needed. A lot of online research as well. Sumbimitted on Monday.
I’m glad that I did it. Hopefully my work will be paid off.
Thanks a lot for the info Skybird. I already submitted my report before I saw this.
Yes I agree with you. I think they mostly want to see my writing skills, like if it’s logical, concise, etc , as well as my real estate investment knowkedge, and if I can do charts and tables
I think I did more than they asked for. My level II knowledge about REITs did help a lot.
We’ll see how it goes.
Have been applying for jobs for 4 months now. Landed 2 interviews so far. One positon was canceled after the interview. Can’t belive my luck. The other one has been almost a month and no message yet. Not positive.
I’m really interested in research field, but will have to see what I can get.
Reading your posts in this thread, I think your written communication skills need quite a bit of work. If you want to write research reports, you need to learn to write.
