Tumi bag will probably last forever. However, Samsonite will also last forever and even stuff like Jansport will probably last forever (plus they fix the bags for free). So ultimately, I have concluded that it is a status symbol.
I used to travel a lot and had some samsonite “black label” nylong luggage (not the weird new metal stuff) that had a lifetime warrenty. It held up but showed serious signs of wear after a few years including frayed nylon, similar cosmetic damage. The ballistic nylon on my Tumis has held up much better under heavy use and essentially still looks newish. Is that worth another $300? Personal choice I guess.
I did watch the wheel break off of my friend’s Jansport once when we arrived at the airport for a trip to Egypt. They may fix it for free, but it didn’t keep him from having a POS bag to drag around with him for the entirety of the trip.
Are those brands really worth the money? I have had a simple luggage bag from macys which I used for years and it’s still in a decent shape. But I travel very light and only a couple of times per year.
I bought a tumi briefcase that I liked recently. I carry a briefcase frequently enough that it’s worth some extra money to have one that’s reasonably attractive and well designed. My old one (Victorinox) had a broken strap and had gotten overly floppy for my taste.
As for luggage, I don’t know if Tumi is so awesome that you need to pay quite so much of a premium, but I do know that if you travel more than very occasionally, cheap luggage is just not worth the savings you often think you’re making.
That doesn’t mean expensive is always better, but it does mean that if it’s well designed and you travel frequently, don’t get too scared by the premium, assuming you can afford it.
I have a Zero Haliburton briefcase, my only piece of status luggage. Really cool looking, but heavy as hell and I hardly ever use it. I was bitchin’ back in the late 80’s though.
I flew over 80 long haul flight legs in 2014 (long story) and almost 20 in the first part of 2015. On almost all of these flights, I observed that the flight crew uses Travel Pro luggage. I don’t know why this is, but maybe it is worth looking into this line of suitcases. The pilot usually has some old leather looking bag whose brand I could not determine.
I should note that I do own some Tumi products. They are very nice, but they are vanity pieces to me. On the marathon of flights mentioned above, I ended up using cheaper bags.
Maybe. However, I commonly see them walk through security with the carry on wheeled luggage and duffel bags. It is conspicuous because they are allowed to cut the security line. They all use the same (or similar) bag it seems. You can also see them carry these bags onto the plane while you are boarding. If you spent as much time in the airport as I did, you can also see the pilots and other flight crew hanging out in bars and restaurants in the terminal.
The fact that you see them in the terminal with their bags is why I asked the question. Just about any bag will last a long time and look great if it never gets checked.
