First day at a new job... suit?

I will soon start working at a financial services firm where the dress code is business casual (button down + slacks). On my first day, should I wear a suit? I don’t want to have “FNG” written across my forehead even more than it already will be, but then again, I want to make good first impressions with those I haven’t already met. Yeah, I think I’ll wear a suit regardless of the responses I get here, but I’m interested in your opinion.

I can already anticipate the responses… “Wear a Monkey Suit!” “Shorts and flip-flops will be fine” haha

I know a guy who did that. He was forever branded the company dork after day 1.

Did what? Wore a suit? Was the company Walmart, and was he the new stock-boy?

hmmm how about a tie and nice long sleeve shirt?

go casual - then ask for the first week off to study for exam - your new boss will love you…

JRado it will be the tackiest move ever…like ever…But do it just to amuse us. And trust me its under the category ‘douchebag’ in men’s grooming. Oh and dont forget to take your business card that wouldnt fit in a rolodex and your power point resume.

"I will soon start working at a financial services firm where the dress code is business casual (button down + slacks). " so why the fukc would you wear a suit?

I can’t tell if you’re being sarcastic or not… The reason I ask is that, in the e-mail before the superday, it said something like “We’re business casual… dress appropriately” All the interviewees that showed up (including me) were wearing suits, except one dude in b-casual. You could tell the guy felt like an idiot. But that was the interview, this is the first day at work… hmmmm And when I was in the military, it was protocol to wear your dress uniform when reporting to a new command.

Only wear a suit if you are also going to wear sunglasses all day. The coolness from the shades will offet the dorkiness JTLD referenced above.

I would say wear a suit, you can always take off the jacket and tie. Better to be over dressed than under dressed

best option is to wear a sports coat, no tie. classy.

Cuz then you are the guy who caved in and took off the tie after everyone saw you with it on. Just wear biz casual with a frickin coat. Looks nice (depending on your threads), you can remove the coat without looking like a tool, c’mon now…by financial services do you mean Farmers Insurance Co?

Negative… I’m an equity research associate.

well i continue to lose respect for sell side analysts, now they can’t even dress themselves. kidding man, good luck with the new gig, dont forget to iron.

Dress slightly dressier than you saw your colleagues dress when you visited, but not all that much dressier. People know that you want to impress on your first day, and as long as it isn’t over the top, it’ll be fine. Then dress down to the office norm subsequently.

Yeah, screw it, I’m wearing a suit… I might take the tie off after lunch. I was a linebacker in high school and 0331 in the Marines for 4 years active and 4 years reserve during college, so I don’t think I’ll get a dork reputation

Al Bundy was a running back in High School…just sayin’.

What you wanna bet that I can throw this ball over dem mountains?
