This should make people want even better songs. It could be true for someone who’s been around for a long time and 1) Has Money (AKA Doesn’t Care) or 2) Remember When. It’s just the ‘mainstream’ is being guided by people with poor taste and everyone flocks in that direction.
I disagree with purealpha. First off, even associating money with quality of music shows a total understanding of real artists and the industry. Also, artists like lady gaga have larger recording budgets than almost every artists before them, so how do you explain their garbage? … I always here people b*tching and whining about “music’s not good anymore, whaaaa whaaaa”. Those people are idiots. Usually I ask them what sort of music they listen to and they respond with “oh you know, what’s on the radio”. 1) 90% of what’s on the radio has ALWAYS been crap. If you go back through the years and look at the hit lists there’s so much garbage on it. But only the song’s that are real quality stick around, so those are the one’s we remember with that time period, survivorship bias. 2) More importantly, only losers with no musical taste whatsoever (people who shouldn’t be judging the quality of music to begin with) get their music off the radio. The indie scene is large and really diverse, containing rock genre’s, hip hop / dance genre’s, folk, country, emo, whatever floats your boat, it’s not just the stuff hipsters listen to. And the indie scene is larger and filled with more vibrant artists than it ever has been thanks to the invent of online media that killed the pop industry. Just the lame @ss uncreative types that expect their music spoon fed to them will never realize this. And lastly, every time I respond with this, someone goes, “oh no, I listen to indie, like death cab for cutie, foster the people, Mumford & sons, or __insert other indie sensation band name here____” Which basically means your just better at following the crowd than the average sheep.

Agree. A little more rude than I would of done, but I think the point got across. If the music is shitty, you’re looking in the wrong places. I’m not saying you have to be the first to discover something, but read a music blog and decide what you think the “Next Big Thing” will be. The indie thing/internet is really true. I’m pretty big on hip hop and I think it has gotten better recently, but I barely listen to radio. Not to say I don’t jam to some catchy stuff, but that’s more of an exception than a rule. What type of music are you looking for?
For those interested in treading more challenging musical paths: Colin Stetson - New History Warfare Vol. 2: Judges Saxophonist that makes songs that sound like epic collages of poetry and horns. Fans of Godspeed You! Black Emperor and Philip Glass should take note. No overdubs involved in the recording and I can’t figure out how he made the songs sound they way they do. Pretty much unlike anything I’ve ever heard. Probably my fave album of 2011 so far. Zombi - Escape Velocity What happens when you get two fans of John Carpenter and Goblin (70’s Italo-disco band that scored lots of Dario Argento horror movies) and put them in a room with a drum kit, a bass guitar and a stack of synthesizers? This album. Wolves in the Throne Room - Celestial Lineage Kvlt metal heroes from the Pacific Northwest. Environmentally conscious lyrics under walls of epic guitars. All vintage equipment. They live on a farm in a remote area of Washington state which just adds to their mystique. Some songs have female vocals that are just ethereal sounding. Forest of Stars - Opportunistic Thieves of Spring Psychadelic metal band from the UK with lyrics that sound like they were written by Charles Dickens. Maybe my fave album from 2010. Zombie Zombie - Plays John Carpenter 5-song album of reimagined themes from Carpenter’s movies. Stellar in every way. Abbe May - Design Desire Been digging on this lately. Female Australian rocker with a sound in the vein of the White Stripes. She has a song, Mammalian Locomotion, that played at the end of an episode of Entourage this season.
