What Would Harvard Business School Do To Your Career?

In one sentence I did a comp sci undergrad and masters in the UK and am working for an american investment bank in risk management (not IT but a strong tendencancy towards spreadsheet development)… I am seriously thinking of doing an MBA at Harvard - If I got accepted and passed what ind of job opportunities could I expect?

Do you know that some harvard MBAs can only do independent “consulting” or start their own firm because of what expected of the degree?

With this kind of language skill, I’m pretty sure you will not be accepted into Harvard’s MBA program.

Isnt it too much to comment on the language skill on the basis of two sentences. Anyways, I found them perfectly fine, thus you can very well surmise that I am also not HBS material.

Quite amazing how you can make that judgement from a two sentence statement - If you have nothing valuable to add please dont bother posting

I think it would open up a world of opportunities. . . it is Harvard afterall.

GWB has an MBA from Harvard. That pretty much means the job opportunities are unlimited, but it won’t convince anyone that you are smart or well-educated.

I know really f-ing smart Harvard MBA’s with no careers and know of a really f-ing stupid Harvard MBA who screwed up the most important job in the world.

Because typing sentences free of grammatical error and with perfect spelling are a must on the analyst forum or any other online forum for that matter to get into Harvard.

if you already have your masters (i’m guessing it’s fairly quantitative/technical from your comp sci undergrad,) and you think you have a shot at HBS – why not just go for a quantitative/finance PHD in a reputable school instead? it will probably be significantly more interesting, more intellectually challenging, and open up more room to advance in your current career path (risk mgmt.) that is, unless you’re going for a career change or trying to get into investment banking or something… in which case good luck and you probably will want to go to HBS.

Instead of wearing your pastel tie with cute litte fishes to happy hour, you can wear your HBS tie to happy hour.

Management Consulting and Investment Banking are the traditional hot career paths for all top level business schools. That being said, get accepted first, then worry about the rest cause HBS opens doors to different career paths.

Harvard can be great depending on what you want to do in the future, then again so can Wharton, Stern, etc. My dad taught at Harvard for the last thirty-something years and he always reminds me that part of the Harvard mystique is just straight forward branding (he wasn’t in business though). I’ve worked with a lot of Harvard MBA: some are brilliant and others I wouldn’t trust to get me proper change for lunch. A top ten, top twenty MBA can help open doors and lead to network connections, but what really matters is the quality and consistency of your work once your past those first hurdles. Good luck in deciding

From the perspective of a wanna-be-full-time academic, but employed as a lowly analyst, the intellectual challenge would be worth it! That being said, I know a girl who scored 780 on her GMAT and got declined from HBS. She had three years of work experience as an investment banker in Hong Kong and passed level 3 (awaiting her charter). I couldn’t comment on what they’re looking for!

If you can get into HBS and are a personable fellow with the ability to make connections naturally it could set you up for life. If you get into HBS and are a dil doe, you will still always be a dil doe, just with an HBS degree.

If you can get into HBS, go, no matter what anyone tells you.
