So one thing that America does well (on top of burgers and sandwiches) is winter parka jackets. I was thinking of splashing out on a decent down jacket but was wondering what the views are on the following brands or if there are other brands out there that I’ve not thought of. I’m ok to spend about £400…maybe a little more…
I’ve looked into Canada Goose (out of price range), Woolrich, Penfield, Alpha Industries. I’m thinking about Penfield…given the price is point. What are your views?. Any other brands out there i can look at?..
the missus almost talked me into getting a Canada Goose one a few weeks ago. Glad I didn’t pull the trigger on that as i found out later they use real fur and down. I get the whole thing about how it’s warmer than anything man made but if it’s not like I’d be trekking through the arctic in it
Just get a northface one. Only will set u back 100-200 bucks and often have discounts. Qualify is great I’ve had a few for 5-6 years now still good as new.
Canada Goose (I got these for urban wear for my wife and mom), Mountain Hardwear and Outdoor Research would be awesome, Arc’teryx (if they make one but would be far out of your price range if CG is), Patagonia (would be better than NF but will only have lithe fit for climbers, possibly out of price range), Marmot, Helly Hanson (again, if they make one and possibly out of price range). These are all mostly performance brands for serious winter sports like ice climbing and back country skiing, so may not be necessary for what you’re looking for and may lack the styling in which case North Face might be your best bet at bridging the gap between outdoor and urban. L.L. Bean makes good casual stuff.
For me, the real down and fur was what drew me to Canada Goose (among other things). I use real down in everything that uses down. It actually has legitimate performance differences (packs smaller, warmer per weight) with only one real down side vs synthetic (synthetic can offer some warmth even if wet) that is remedied by using a waterproof shell like Goretex. Also, the fit and styling of CG is nice.
you are in nyc right pokhim? you dont need to waste that much money on a coat, it only gets very cold 5 days or so a year usually. Realistically the jacket you need is based on your commute. Is your subway stop above/below ground and how far is your walk. 90% of people are fine without a massive parka but they are hip now so everyone wants to drop 700 bucks on a coat.
This. I would also add that if you take subway everyday, it’s best to have a warm but compact (is this the right word?) coat, not too puffy… Northface or Patagonia are decent brands.
You climbing Kilimanjaro or something? Realistically, anything that costs up to $200 is going to be fine. If you don’t want to pay for North Face, Columbia or something like that is almost as good, and there is tons of stock laying about everywhere that some retailer will have special deals on. It’s probably a better value to focus on where you can get a discounted price on Amazon, rather than target some specific coat that is bid up because it is the trendy thing. I’d spend the extra money on some nice lightweight waterproof shoes for walking in the snow.
Back in the day, my brother begged for a Starter jacket (Chicago Bulls) for his birthday present. I told him that it was a terrible idea, as only wiggers and wannabes wore those coats in our area. My mom finally caved and bought him the expensive coat. My brother wore it to school for one day and was ridiculed so hard that he never wore it again. What a tool. My mom was so pissed. Fortunately, my brother has since improved.
I’m in London… and i do occasionally walk places… and i’m a f*ing baller in my ends so i need to drop a lot of cash on a decent parka.
Will take another look at patagonia, but I want to avoid looking like a europ teen raver as much as possible. So could do without the quilted exterior look.
I like down, i like fur trim (of faux fur), i like slim fitting luxury.
I would think North Face and Patagonia are going to be the best fit in the price range you indicated. Eastern Mountain Sports might also have a private label parka that fits the bill. I’ve had a lot of EMS gear over the years and have never been disappointed. I imagine REI has similar private label options and one or both should have a store somewhere in NYC.
