A win for the Portugese ties them with USA on points making it boil down to goal difference. If the Americans avoid getting thrashed they should be fine. If the Ghanians beat the Portugese then it becomes harder because Ghanas goal difference is better.
The team than makes it out of this group will draw Belgium who are absolutely there for the taking.

FIFA really should change the tiebreaker rules. Head-to-head results should be the first tiebreaker.
That is, if Ghana wins against Portugal, and the US loses to Germany, Ghana and US both have four points. The tie should go to the US, because they’ve already beaten Ghana. Goal difference should be the second tiebreaker.
Maybe I should add a “Ways to improve FIFA” thread.
There are various schools of thought to that.
La Liga uses the system you mentioned, Premier League does not.
A draw puts both US and Germany through. I see a very slow paced, energy conserving 0-0 draw on Thursday.
Because every team in the group plays every other team in the group, I’m fine with the goal differential being the tie breaker. Head-to-head can penalize a team for one bad outcome (Ghana should have beaten the US or at least drawn with them), whereas the goal differential rewards teams for performance throughout group play.
Why? Goal difference gives you a bigger sample size and shows you your performance in all your games, not just one, it’s a better metric of your strength, especially given how close these games are. Granted, that can be a problem when you have a minnow in your group…
Neder all the way if they win today. They are consistent. Argentina hasn’t played anyone yet, I was really rooting for Bosnia in that game. BRL could go on a run and win it though.
I don’t see Portugal finding their way through a difficult Ghana side that really should have done better in their first game. A draw would preserve things for both teams, and despite what JK will say publicly, IMO that’s what they should play for - bunker for 90 minutes Iran-style. This is no time for pride…

The USA are an incredibly naive team. With 90 sec to go they were crossing the ball into the box and loosing the ball in the middle of the park.
