I watched last nights episode (mind you this is my first time watching this show) and i hated it. Looked like softcore porn to me
^ban him
i never read the books. so i’m happy to hear she finally got control of the dragons. now she can take over the south. while peter takes over the north. the two can marry and bring harmony to the 7 kingdoms. finally the bank of braavos gets their due. i’ve been so worrried about the bank since they never talked about credit default swaps. crazy right? manage yo risks.
^She had more control of them when they were small, like at Astapor where she killed the slave masters. This season it’s about her struggling to rule and control her dragons.
I don’t know about you guys, but I have a hard time sympathizing with Daenarys, at least in the TV show. The script (and possibly the actress) assume that a strong female leader can be portrayed by just being a bitch to everyone. I’m watching the Daenerys scenes, and I’m like, come on Jorah, why are you taking this shit? It doesn’t help that Emilia is the worst actress in the whole show and never makes her situation believable. Dragons are cool and all, but somehow, this is the only show where I wish I was rather watching a dwarf with (presumably) a big dick, a creepy bald guy with no dick, or an underage girl who Palantir wants to bone.
^There’s a theory that Dany is going slowly insane throughout the books. It’s a pretty strong theory but I haven’t bought into it yet.
Nah, I think Dany is supposed to parallel Rhaegar and Viserys is supposed to parallel all the crazy people. It’s a bit less interesting this way, because it seems that Dany has to “win” somehow later in the story. So, when she is in danger, etc. you just think she will escape.
^I think most of the ASIOF community would strongly disagree with you that Dany is supposed to parallel Rhaegar. Rhaegar was pretty much the best at everything he did (except avoiding large warhammers). Dany has good intentions but really isn’t a good ruler. Nearly every decision she makes is a bad one. Doesn’t make her insane, but she’s no Rhaegar.
At any rate, the dragon has three heads. Dany is obviously one, JS is likely the other…no idea who the third head is. Probably Benjen.
I think Dany will die in the end. She can’t be the winner as the queen has tio produce an heir, which she can’t do. Jon Snow has to pull lightbringer out of somebody _ bride of fire _…plus all she seems to want is the house with the red door…
Still got Aegon to worry about too.
We need somebody who’s going to play rhaegars harp. It is the song of ice and fire…and I don’t know which character has any musical talent.
I’m with StL on the whole Dany is not Rhaeger thing. Here’s what I remember from the books. Rhaeger starts life as sort of bookish, reads something, and decides to become a warrior. In fact, he becomes a great warrior, is loved, and spends his free time playing the harp for the commoners (as Palantir points out). At the tourney in the trident, he hits on Lyanna Stark, “kidnaps” her, prompting the Baratheon revolution, and ends up dead. I honestly can’t point to a single thing that really parallels with Dany’s story at this point.
I would agree with your point about her being a bad ruler. However, the whole point is that she is a bad ruler _ now _. She purposefully stays in Mereen to learn how to be a better ruler before she goes to Westeros. The question is if she will actually succeed in this. In fact, that’s really the big difference between her and any other character in the book. Most other characters just assume they would make good kings and start trying to take over. Most of the other characters just start conquering stuff. Actually, Cersei might be the one exception to that. She’s more interested in ruling than conquering (though she’s terrible at it).
Great episode last night. The show is really deviating from the books, but so far so good I suppose.
Good to see the Starks start to kick some ass again.
What an outstanding 20 minutes of television. I heard that this battle was not covered in the books , if true then the writers of the show deserve a lot of credit.
Quick question -Approximately how many White Walkers are there? Last season (?) when the baby was sacrificed there looked like an entire tribe of White Walkers yet in the previous episode there were 4 on the hill and one in the hut. Either way Walking Dead will never be the same now.
Solid “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” reference…
It was an awesome episode. I didn’t blink in that last 20 minutes.
There were a lot of changes from the book in that episode. The thing about Hardhome is a little more nuanced. There is no comparable battle in the books, but Jon sends someone up there to bring back the wildlings and things don’t go well. You mostly hear about it second hand since no POV characters are there.
To your quick question: book readers are as in the dark as you are.
I think the interesting thing was that King WW was watching Jon kill the other WW before his show of force at the end. Jons a marked man now.
When the Wildling mother says to her child “I’ll be on the boat just behind you,” I turned to my girlfriend and said, “Something really bad must be about to happen, because they wouldn’t have bothered to separate mom from child otherwise.”
